‘figment’ was a site-responsive exhibition engaging with archival materials and the neo-classical architecture of the Lady Franklin Gallery. Chew and Koroluk-Stephenson explored the entangled stories of Lady Jane and Sir John Franklin, interweaving themes of dislocation, grief and stasis that persist at the gallery, a curious example of lutruwita/Tasmania's colonial design sited at Ancanthe Park. Through an assemblage of paintings, collage, sculptures and speculative fictions, the two artists unpicked mythologised aspects of the Franklin history and consider elements of folly and delusion in the Franklins' aspirations. ‘figment’ offering an opportunity to consider the shadow meanings of colonial presence in the landscape.
This project was assisted through Arts Tasmania by the Minister for the Arts. It has been kindly supported by The Art Society of Tasmania and the Lady Franklin Gallery.
Amber Koroluk-Stephenson is represented by Bett Gallery, Hobart.
